The study evaluated natural background groundwater arsenic levels in Washington state, using data from more than 5,000 public water supply wells. “Natural background” means not altered by human activity. It is defined in the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) Cleanup Rule as “…the concentration of hazardous substance consistently present in the environment that has not been influenced by localized human activities.” (WAC 173-340-200).
